交流サイト(SNS)大手のミクシィが、競合するツイッターと提携。友人申請の乗り入れや日記投稿の共有を可能にするなど、主力機能を幅広く連携させる。11月30日に記者会見したミクシィの笠原健治社長は「災害時向けのサービスと季節ごとのイベントで共同広告商品を展開できる」と指摘。ツイッター日本法人の近藤正晃ジェームス代表は「日本におけるSNSのパイオニアと組めて光栄。興味でつながるツイッターと、人でつながるミクシィとの親和性は高い」と説明した。

ミクシィを競合との提携に駆り立てたのは足元の業績不振だ。2012年3月期の中間決算は売上高が前期比1.2%減の60億円、営業利益は8.5億円と半減した。増益計画だった通期予想も一転して大幅減益を見込む。主因は「従来型の携帯電話からスマートフォンへの移行を読み切れず、広告収入が落ち込んだ」ことだ。同社は売上高の約6割を従来型携帯向け広告に依存。スマホ向け広告の立ち上げが遅れたことで急激な収益悪化につながった。

加えて、1000万人を超え、国内SNSで圧倒的だった訪問者数は現在、フェイスブックの後塵を拝し800万人強まで低下していることも広告主の出稿意欲をそいでいる。ミクシィは「携帯経由のユーザーが主流」と意に介さないが、「携帯でも同じく劣勢」との見方が大勢だ。訪問者数減少の理由は、2500万人いる登録ユーザーの大半を占める学生と若年女性の離反だ。当初招待制のみで知人同士中心のコミュニケーションが支持されたが、10年3月に廃止。今年6月には、どのユーザーが自分のサイトにアクセスしたかを知る「足あと機能」の常時表示もやめた。これには異例の1万7000人が反対署名をミクシィ側に渡すなど、コアユーザーから強い反発を招いた。
